Murray Hill Inc for congress
Submitted by paul on Fri, 02/05/2010 - 14:44BTW, I really really hope this is a joke.
This thing scares me silly:
This is all we need, corporations having a political arm. Communism was a joke compared to what this could lead to.

“It’s our democracy,” Murray Hill Inc. says, “We bought it, we paid for it, and we’re going to keep it.”
This is exactly how you would imagine a corporation talking about democracy and why this should NEVER be allowed to happen.

Netting it out: The best way to think about iPad is as the device that inspired Steve Jobs to create the iPhone and the iPod Touch. It's the vaunted 3.0 vision of a 1.0 deliverable that began its public life when the first generation of iPhone launched only two-and-a-half years ago, and as I wrote about previously HERE, it is a product that is deeply personal to Steve Jobs, and I believe the final signature product on an amazing career. I would view yesterday's launch in that light.

About how .avi, .mkv and flash could do for the iPad what .mp3 did for the iPod
http://www.zeropaid.com/news/87921/ipad-as-video-device-not-so-much/
In a funny twist about the inability of iPhone/iPod/iPad to play flash, this will probably force websites with video players to switch to html5 solutions sooner rather than later, given the apparent availability of html5 video in n-1 browsers as of this month. With this, the history of the flash format and its closed ecosystem is about to end at the hand of another closed ecosystem (apple). History will no doubt repeat itself at some point in the future.

iPad
Submitted by paul on Thu, 01/28/2010 - 12:07I guess it could have been worse and I could've hated it today 24h after announcement; yet I'm still thinking about it.
- Of course book/newspaper/magazine publishers will love it cause it eliminates borrowing of said books/newspapers/magazines and forces everyone interested in them to buy them. I love both reading books/documents on screen and having the paper copy to lend to friends and see in the bookcase.
- It's probably the best way to watch movies and clips up close and personal. iPhone/iPod is too small
- iPad/iMaxiPad well, i thought at first it was a good name because it was so close to the iPod, but people keep making fun of it. Will this deter people from buying it? Scared of being made fun of?
- iPad name was being held by Samsung and it's going to be available in 2 months? (Patrick Beja on appslappy)
- 16/32/64G at 100$ difference? shouldn't the difference in price between 16 and 32 be less than the one between the 32 and 64? 100$ upgrade price for the memory is too big compared to the initial price of the device.
- It's priced very well starting at 499$. Even at this price it can still be an impulse buy.
- It is a great platform for expanding the hardware. There is enough space and battery in the case for all your hardware needs. This first release it's like beta testing a new product line; they don't know what to put in it and will use all the feedback they can get. It makes a good case for waiting for version 2.
Wishlist:
- Camera or 2 or a reversible camera. Honestly, aren't Camera chips available for about 5$ in china? WTF?
- Multi-tasking or limited multi-tasking for media players, ie, let pandora play in the background
- Usb port on the side. Make that 2/4.
- Buying a paper book will also give you a token to download the book online and read on iPad. Could cost a bit more for this but not a lot (2.99$). Electronic only version of book has to be WAAAAY below paper book... think 30% of cost.

@(Unverified) Actually the Cortex A9 chip is much faster than the Intel Atom processor. Meaning that it is faster then the netbooks out today and since it is dual core then it more powerful than any cell phone chip because there are no phones that have dual core processors that I know of.
S&H
Submitted by paul on Thu, 12/17/2009 - 15:52S&H (shipping and handling) is an extraordinary concept. For example when buying anything on ebay, the seller tells you that S&H is 4.95$. You pay, the package comes to you and you see that shipping is only 2$. You tell this to the seller and he claims that the difference is the "handling". Since when is handling not covered by the profit? Well, I understand that the seller is pushing to show a low sell price, but it is disingenuous to hide profit under the "handling" umbrella.
In the same chapter, see the practice in Canada to show prices in stores w/o the taxes. Only at the cashier you see another 13% added to the price. Since when am I the buyer interested how much of the price goes to the government? Total cost is what interests me. It is just another way to increase the profit artificially.

http://www.mediafax.ro/main-story/cc-poate-admite-cererea-psd-numai-daca...
Citat:
Seful partidului e prim ministru.
How about in Romania? E la liber? Nu exista vreo posibilitate sa falimentezi financiar partidele politice?

Submitted by paul on Mon, 12/07/2009 - 15:06Foarte bun editorial al lui Dan Cristian Turturica in Romania Libera de luni 7 decembrie.
Daca vrei sa iti exprimi nemultumirea, macar voteaza-i pe amandoi.

"the definition set out in Article One of the1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States: “The state as a person of international law should possess the following qualifications: (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) government; and (d) capacity to enter into relations with the other states.”
Until yesterday, the EU qualified on grounds (a), (b) and (c). Now it has ticked the final box. Under the Lisbon Treaty, which came into force today, it acquires “legal personality”, which gives it the right to sign accords and treat with other states. Nor is this right simply theoretical: the EU now has a foreign minister, a diplomatic corps (the European External Action Service) and 160 overseas embassies."

Submitted by paul on Fri, 11/27/2009 - 02:48The Missing Hero Class
Submitted by paul on Tue, 10/20/2009 - 12:16So in the process of building my warcraft armory app I came across an interesting tidbit of info. I was mapping the class id values to names, and I got the following map:
WARRIOR(1, "Warrior"), PALADIN(2, "Paladin"), HUNTER(3, "Hunter"), ROGUE(4, "Rogue") PRIEST(5, "Priest"), DEATHKNIGHT(6, "DeathKnight"), SHAMAN(7, "Shaman"), MAGE(8, "Mage"), WARLOCK(9, "Warlock"), DRUID(11, "Druid");
Now, if you are a programmer and you have to write an enum, you will pick sequential numbers. Death Knights which appeared in 2008 have id 6. They have id 6 because they were picked from the beginning and later removed from the initial vanilla wow launch. For the first few years, the id 6 was probably empty and nobody parsing armory xml knew what the name associated with it was. Come 2008 we now know.
On to the question... what lies behind door number 10? :) It's surely something picked from the beginning as druid comes at 11. Also, who would pick 11 for anything, 12 is such a nicer number. Is there anything hidden behind door number 12? I'm almost sure the name and the idea behind the missing classes is there, and there's probably good reason why they are not implemented.
Hum hum hum
Submitted by paul on Mon, 10/12/2009 - 08:08Neighbor's hot tub hums about one minute every 10 minutes and kept me up all night. It's a pesky low frequency hum that you can hear just as well inside the house as outside. Not sure what we're going to do but most likely will fire up a noise complaint with Brampton city hall. It's been going on since august and can't really be tolerated. The buck stops here. Nobody messes up with my sleep.
